Best Fence Paint

As a way to add extra colour to your outdoor space, painting your fence is one of those simple things that anybody can do. While keeping your garden fence maintained might not sound like a lot of fun, but painting or staining your fence or garden gate every few years will improve its appearance, preserve it for years, and keep the neighbours happy! But when it is time to add a new lick of paint, you shouldn’t rush out and splash any sort of paint on; you need to take your time. Let’s show you what you can do to make your fence paint job a good one.

Why Paint A Fence?

Painting a fence can be one of those tasks that we can put off, but there are many reasons to paint a fence:

Painting the fence is a great way to protect exterior wood.

Over the years, fences can be damaged by the weather, especially when they are unpainted, which results in rotting and being covered in mould. The best way to protect wood fencing is with good quality paint to create a barrier from the rain and protect the wood from rotting.

You can add coats over the seasons to protect it from all weathers.

You can add one coat of paint to give great weather-proofing protection from snow, rain and mist but add another one in spring, ready for the sunnier months. With one coat on, the wood looks better keeps the fence fresh ready for the next seasons. Dividing this up through the months will keep your fence looking great all year long.

It lightens your outdoor space

Painting your fences in lighter colours like white makes your indoor spaces feel bigger and brighter by bouncing light into the home and as reflects back out it adds light that everyone can appreciate.

It adds colour to a dull garden, whatever the season

When the winter season arrives, your garden will start to look a bit sparse and sad. By painting your woodwork, you can add colour to your outdoor space during the winter. And during the autumnal months, it easily adds brightness, even if the weather is damp and miserable, and creates a subtle background for any plants you have.

It adds value to your home

A well-maintained garden with a fence can increase a property’s value by approximately 20%, as it appeals to families and pet owners, and tall privacy fencing appeals to prospective buyers. When you think about how your fence looks, the idea of kerb appeal should loom in your mind. A fence is a little thing, but it says so much about the home and the people who live within it.

FAQs

What Is The Best Way To Paint A Fence?
Like with most DIY jobs, preparation is key. The more time you spend ensuring the preparation work is done as best as you can, the better the results:

Choose the right paint and tools
Wood paint is specially designed for wood fences; it is tough, durable and can be wiped clean. If you use primer or undercoat on the panels before you start, the lifespan of the wood will increase so won’t need to redecorate as often.

If you are painting by hand, you might want to consider using a pump or power sprayer. If you decide to use a sprayer, use paint that’s been formulated for use in that sprayer type and make sure you do not use it on a windy day for practical reasons. But brushes are great if you’re only painting a small area, like edges and hard to reach places.

How to apply the paint

  1. Sand down rough areas or splinters sticking out of the panels. This ensures they are as smooth as possible to ensure a better finish.
  2. Apply a layer of primer to the panels and let them dry completely to give a better finish and increase the life of your paint.
  3. Use a large brush to paint the panels. Use horizontal strokes for horizontal wood panes and vertical strokes for vertical panes of wood. Follow the direction of the grain to give it a smoother finish.
  4. Apply the paint liberally, making sure there’s enough to fully penetrate the timber. Be careful not to leave drips; start at the top and work your way down.
  5. Check you haven’t missed any areas. If you have been using a sprayer, use a brush to paint the small spaces between the panels and posts.
  6. If necessary, you can apply a second coat of paint to the panels.

When Is The Best Time To Paint A Fence?

There are two schools of thought for when to paint your fence. The summer months are considered the best time to do this because it is dry and the paint will set better. But before you start, check the weather forecast for at least 24 hours before applying the paint. Ideally, you need to paint your fence in dry conditions above 5°c. If the weather is too cold, the paint will not dry. If it has been raining recently, you need to wait for the wood to completely dry before painting it.

If you are painting your fence in the height of summer, wait until the fence is in the shade before you start. If the wood is too hot, the paint dries too quickly so it won’t get a chance to soak into the wood properly. The paint is only able to protect the timber properly if it is given time to soak in. But those that have issues with the summer months can view autumn as the best season to paint your fence. If the fence is in the garden, it can be easier to paint because when the flowers and shrubs die off in autumn, you will be able to reach areas of your fencing that are usually covered in plants and greenery.

It is a boring and thankless task, but it is something that can truly add a bit more brightness to the home. A fence adds value, helps an outdoor space look neater, and makes your home appear cosy and comfy.
