Does Broccoli Grow Underground?

Does broccoli grow underground? Or does it grow above ground? let’s have a look and find out.

Does Broccoli Grow Underground?

No broccoli does not grow underground. Broccoli grows above ground on a leafy green plant. Regular broccoli plants form one large central head of broccoli while sprouting broccoli produce lots of smaller heads.

Above you can see a young broccoli plant. At this point, the plant is all leaves and there is nothing on it that resembles the broccoli you would eat.

This will start developing now on the plant. If it is regular broccoli then one large broccoli head will begin to form in the centre of the plant.

There are also sprouting forms of broccoli. Rather than growing one large central ‘head’ of broccoli, these form numerous side shoots with small broccoli heads on them.

These can be cut off and the plant will keep on growing and producing more of these shoots.

And then finally there is romanesco broccoli which is simply amazing to look at. The heads on this broccoli form the most amazing of patterns which look manmade rather than natural.
