Sweet peas are an amazing flower to grow, both for their fabulous look and gorgeous scent. but if you have ever grown sweet peas before then you will know that they need plenty of support. But can you grow sweet peas on an obelisk? Let’s find out.

Can you grow sweet peas on an obelisk?
Yes, you can grow sweet peas on an obelisk. Sweet peas need something to grow up and an obelisk provides all the support they need.
Any obelisk will work just fine but be aware that you will probably need to tie your sweet peas in at first. Use twine or a twist tie to attach them to the structure.
Just make sure that you do not fasten the ties tight as this could damage the plant. You can leave it pretty loose, it just needs to hold the sweet pea in roughly the right place.
Over time the plant will do the rest and attach itself to the obelisk using its tendrils. If you are thinking of other ways to support your sweet peas then have a look at my sweet pea support ideas. Or read my post about growing sweet peas on a trellis.
Why not try growing your sweet peas in pots with an obelisk placed in the middle to provide some vertical interest to your garden.
More on Sweet peas
sweet peas, (Lathyrus odoratus) are a flowering plant belonging to the legume family. They are an annual flower that loves to climb and spread, in the right conditions and with the correct support they can grow to 2 and a half meters tall!

Unlike many other legumes which are grown to be eaten, sweet peas are grown for purely aesthetic reasons. There is evidence to suggest that the pea seeds from a sweet pea plant are actually toxic to humans and not fit for consumption even if this was desired.
