How long do sweet peas flower for?

The abundant blooms that sweet peas produce are simply wonderful, and the fragrance they give off is something else, so it is no wonder you will want to prolong this for as long as possible. but how long do sweet peas flower for? Let’s have a look and find out.

So, how long do sweet peas flower for?

If you really look after your sweet pea plants you can actually get them to flower all summer long from June to October.

So how do you look after your sweet peas to get fabulous displays all summer long? I have some really helpful tips for you below.

Cutting The Flowers

This may seem counterintuitive but the best way to make your sweet peas flower all summer long is to take regular flower cuttings. Sweet peas will want to go to seed, and once they have done they will start to produce fewer and fewer flowers.

So as gardeners we can prolong their flowering period by never letting them go to seed. To do this we want to take regular cuttings from the plants when they are in flower. You want to be doing this every two weeks ideally.

This should stop any of the flowers from going to seed and therefore the plant will keep producing bloom after bloom for as long as it can. As a brilliant side benefit you will also get a regular supply of wonderfully fragrant sweet peas for your home. Just arrange the cut flowers in a vase with plenty of water and away you go.

Plenty of water

Sweet peas can be thirsty, particularly in the summer when they are in the middle of flowering. In order to help them out, it is a great idea to regularly water them.

Make sure you also give them a really good soak after every cutting you take to help them renew and regrow.

Full sun

you will get more flowers from your sweet peas if you can plant them in full sun. While sweet peas will grow in partial or dappled shade they will perform the best if planted in full sun. What the sunlight does to sweet peas is allows them to produce more and more flower blooms.

Unlike many other legumes which are grown to be eaten, sweet peas are grown for purely aesthetic reasons. There is evidence to suggest that the pea seeds from a sweet pea plant are actually toxic to humans and not fit for consumption even if this was desired.
