In September they look the best they have looked all year. A summer outdoors has given them the light they never get on a windowsill, and the monstera has thrown out three new leaves, the ficus has filled out, and the whole collection looks like something from a magazine.
By January half of them are dropping leaves, something has fine webbing across it, and there is a small cloud of flies that comes up every time you water.
Every American gardener who summers their houseplants outside knows this arc. And the frustrating part is that almost none of it happens in January. It happens in one afternoon in September or October, when the plants come back inside and something comes in with them.
Here is what most advice on this misses entirely: the danger is not frost. Tropical foliage plants take chilling damage well above freezing, so waiting for a frost warning already means you left it too late. And the bigger problem is what is living in the pot. A plant that spent five months outdoors is carrying passengers, and the dry warm still air of a heated house is close to a perfect breeding environment for most of them.

When to bring them in, by plant type
Not one date. Different plants have genuinely different thresholds and treating them as one group is why people either lose tropicals to cold or drag succulents in six weeks early.
Tropical foliage plants: below 55°F. Monstera, philodendron, pothos, calathea, ficus, alocasia, dieffenbachia, most palms. These take chilling injury at temperatures well above freezing, and the damage shows up weeks later as blackened patches, sudden leaf drop or a plant that simply sulks all winter. Once night temperatures start dipping to 55, they should be in.
Flowering tropicals: below 50°F. Hibiscus, bougainvillea, mandevilla, gardenia. Slightly tougher but not much.
Citrus: below 45°F. Lemons, limes, calamondin. They actually appreciate a cool period and pushing them indoors too early into a warm room causes more problems than leaving them out through a chilly week.
Succulents and cacti: below 40°F. Many will take a light frost without dying, though they will not enjoy it. The bigger danger for succulents outdoors in autumn is rain rather than cold.
Pelargoniums, fuchsias, and other tender perennials: just above freezing. These can stay out until frost genuinely threatens.
The practical version. Watch the ten-day forecast from early September. When the overnight lows start touching 55, the tropicals come in. Everything else follows in stages over the next month or six weeks.
Zones 3 to 5 are usually starting this in early September. Zones 6 to 7 through late September and October. Zones 8 to 9 in October and November, with a lot of plants staying out. Zone 10 brings in very little.
What is actually living in your pots
This is the part worth reading properly, because inspection is the whole game and you cannot inspect for things you are not looking for.
Spider mites. The single worst one, because outdoors they are kept in check by humidity and predators, and indoors in dry heated air they explode. Look for very fine stippling on leaves, a dusty or dull look, and fine webbing in leaf axils and along stems. The mites themselves are barely visible. Hold a sheet of white paper under a leaf and tap it, and you will see specks that move.
Mealybugs. White cottony blobs tucked into leaf joints, stem crooks and under leaves. They look like small pieces of fluff. Easy to spot once you know, easy to miss entirely if you are just glancing at the plant from the front.
Scale. Small brown or tan bumps along stems and leaf undersides, often mistaken for part of the plant. They do not move. Scrape one with a fingernail and if it comes away leaving a wet patch, it is scale.
Aphids. Clustered on new growth and flower buds. Green, black or pink. Usually obvious.
Fungus gnats. The small flies that come up when you water. The adults are harmless and irritating, the larvae live in the top inch of compost eating organic matter and, in numbers, fine roots. A pot that has sat in a shady damp spot all summer will be full of them.
Slugs and snails. Under the pot rim, in the drainage holes, wedged in the saucer. They come indoors, come out at night, and eat holes in leaves for weeks before anyone works out what is happening.
Ants. Whole colonies establish in outdoor pots over a summer. You will not notice until the pot is on the living room floor.
Everything else. Earwigs, spiders, woodlice, and in southern zones the occasional lizard or tree frog. Mostly harmless, universally unwelcome.
The inspection, properly done
Twenty minutes per plant, and it is the difference between a good winter and a bad one.
Take it out of the decorative pot and check between the two. Slugs, snails and spiders live in that gap.
Look underneath the pot and in the drainage holes. Lift it off the ground and check the base. Slugs sit in drainage holes all day.
Turn every leaf over. Not a few. Every leaf. Undersides are where mites, scale and mealybugs live, and the tops of the leaves will look perfect while the undersides are colonized.
Check the leaf axils where leaf meets stem. Mealybugs hide there specifically because it is the spot people do not look.
Check the growing tips. Aphids go for new soft growth first.
Look at the compost surface. Tap the pot and watch for gnats coming up. Poke a finger in and look for the small translucent larvae.
Use a hand lens if you have one. A cheap 10x loupe turns "I think that leaf looks a bit dull" into a definite answer.
Treating what you find
Hose everything down first, whatever you found. Take the plant outside, and give the foliage a firm spray, paying attention to undersides. This physically removes a large proportion of mites, aphids and loose debris before you do anything else. Do it a few days before you plan to bring the plant in, so it dries properly.
The pot soak for soil dwellers. Stand the pot in a bucket of water so the water level sits just above the compost surface. Leave it fifteen to twenty minutes. Ants evacuate, gnat larvae drown, slugs come out. Then let it drain thoroughly. This one step deals with most of what lives below the surface.
Insecticidal soap for mites, aphids and mealybugs. Cover thoroughly including undersides, and repeat after seven days, and again seven days after that. One application never works because it does not kill eggs, and the second and third rounds are what actually break the cycle. This is the most common reason people think soap does not work.
Horticultural oil for scale. Soap struggles with the waxy shell. Oil smothers them. Same repeat schedule.
Rubbing alcohol on a cotton bud for individual mealybugs and scale on a plant with few enough to treat by hand. Fast and effective on a small infestation.
BTI for fungus gnats. Sold as mosquito bits or mosquito dunks. Soak in water, then water the plant with it. Kills the larvae, harmless to the plant. Yellow sticky traps catch the adults while the larvae die off.
Repot if the compost is exhausted or infested. Autumn is a reasonable time, and starting winter in fresh compost with a clean pot removes the entire soil-dwelling problem at once. Do it a couple of weeks before bringing the plant in so it recovers outdoors.
When to give up on a plant. A heavily mite-infested plant with webbing across most of its growth, going into a house with a valuable collection, is not worth the risk. It is a hard call and sometimes it is the right one.
Quarantine, which almost nobody does
Two to three weeks, in a separate room from your existing houseplants.
Why it matters. Eggs hatch. You inspected and treated, and you almost certainly did a good job, and there will still be a proportion of eggs that were not affected. Those hatch over the following fortnight. If the plant is in isolation when that happens, you catch it. If it is on a shelf with eleven other plants, you have distributed the problem.
Where. A spare room, a bathroom, a landing, a garage that stays warm enough. It does not need to be ideal growing conditions for two weeks.
What you are watching for. Any new stippling, any webbing, any gnats. Re-treat if you see anything, and restart the clock.
Bring them in one at a time if you have many. Spreading the operation over three weekends is much less work than dealing with mites across a whole collection in December.
The light problem
Even a plant with no pests at all can fall apart in October, and this is why.
A shaded porch outdoors is brighter than a bright windowsill indoors. Considerably brighter. The plant spent all summer building leaves optimized for high light, and it now has to rebuild for a fraction of it.
What happens. Older leaves yellow and drop. New growth comes smaller and paler. The plant looks like it is dying for about six weeks. Mostly it is adjusting.
How to soften it. Move the plant into deeper shade outdoors for one to two weeks before bringing it in. That starts the adaptation while conditions are still good, rather than making it happen all at once in a dim room in October.
Give them the brightest spot you have for the winter. South-facing windows, as close to the glass as the cold allows. The rules that applied in June do not apply in December, and a plant that scorched in a south window in summer will be perfectly happy there in January.
Consider a grow light if you have a genuinely dark house. A basic full-spectrum LED bar on a timer for ten hours a day makes a substantial difference and costs very little to run.
Watering, which is where most of them actually die
The single biggest killer of houseplants between October and March, and it is a change people fail to make.
Everything slows down. Less light means less photosynthesis, which means less growth, which means far less water used. Cooler air and no wind means the compost dries much more slowly.
A plant that needed water twice a week in July may need it every two or three weeks in January.
Stop watering on a schedule. Push a finger two inches into the compost. If there is any moisture at all, wait. If you are unsure, wait. Almost every houseplant that dies over winter in America dies of root rot, not thirst.
Empty saucers. A pot sitting in a centimeter of water for a week in a cool room is a rotted root system.
Stop feeding. Most houseplants are not growing between November and February. Feeding a dormant plant pushes weak growth and builds up salts in the compost. Resume in March.
Where to put them
Not next to a heat vent or radiator. Dry moving hot air is exactly what spider mites want and exactly what most tropicals cannot cope with. It also dries the compost unevenly, so you overwater trying to compensate.
Not against a cold windowpane. Leaves touching glass on a freezing night take cold damage. A few inches of clearance is enough.
Not by a door that opens to outside. Repeated blasts of cold air cause leaf drop.
Group them together. Plants transpire, and a group of plants creates a slightly more humid pocket of air around itself. It genuinely helps, and it makes watering rounds quicker.
A pebble tray under the group adds a little more humidity. Misting does almost nothing, despite being the most repeated advice in houseplant care. The effect lasts minutes.
Common mistakes
Waiting for a frost warning. Too late for anything tropical. Chilling injury starts around 55°F.
Bringing everything in on the same day. Different plants, different thresholds, and doing it all at once means you inspect none of them properly.
Skipping the leaf undersides. Where nearly everything lives.
One treatment and done. Soap and oil do not kill eggs. Three applications a week apart.
No quarantine. The single most preventable way a small problem becomes a collection-wide one.
Same watering as summer. The main killer.
Feeding through winter. Salt buildup and weak growth.
Putting them somewhere dark because the bright spot is taken. They need more light in winter, not less.
Repotting in January because the plant looks unhappy. It looks unhappy because of the light change. Repotting a stressed dormant plant makes it worse. Wait for spring.
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave them out until the first frost if I cover them?
For tropicals, no. Covering protects from frost, not from the chilling damage that has already been happening on 50-degree nights.
My plant dropped half its leaves after coming in. Is it dying?
Almost certainly not. That is the light adjustment and it is normal, particularly with ficus, which is notorious for it. Keep it bright, water sparingly, and wait. New growth in spring will be adapted to the new conditions.
Do I need to treat a plant that looks completely clean?
The pot soak is worth doing regardless, because soil dwellers are invisible from above. A preventive hose-down of the foliage costs nothing. Full chemical treatment on a plant with no symptoms is not necessary.
How do I stop fungus gnats coming back?
Let the top inch of compost dry between waterings. The larvae need moisture. Combined with BTI and sticky traps, that clears them within a few weeks. Bottom watering also helps because it keeps the surface dry.
Is neem oil better than insecticidal soap?
Neem works as a preventive and a mild treatment, soap is better for knocking down an active infestation, and horticultural oil is better for scale. Neem needs the same repeat schedule and can damage some plants, so test one leaf first.
What about beneficial predators indoors?
Predatory mites work well against spider mites and are available by mail order. Genuinely effective, and worth considering for a large collection where spraying everything is impractical.
My succulents went soft after coming in. What happened?
Almost certainly water. Succulents indoors in winter want very little, in some cases none at all for months. Cool and dark plus damp compost equals rot.
Should I cut plants back before bringing them in?
Trimming leggy growth is worth doing. It reduces the size of the plant you have to house, removes potential pest habitat, and the plant is not going to be replacing that growth until spring anyway.
How long until they look good again?
Most settle by late November and hold steady until the light returns in February. The recovery is usually rapid once daylength picks up again.
Final thoughts
If you take one thing from this, take the temperature threshold. Fifty-five degrees, not frost. Chilling injury on tropical plants happens well above freezing and it shows up weeks later as leaf drop and blackened patches that people blame on the move indoors rather than on the cold nights before it.
The second thing is the inspection. Every leaf turned over, the pot lifted, the compost surface checked, and a soak in a bucket to deal with what lives below the surface. Twenty minutes a plant, done outdoors, before it comes anywhere near the house.
The third is quarantine. Two or three weeks apart from everything else. It feels excessive until the year you skip it and spend February treating spider mites across the whole collection.
And the fourth, which is the one that actually kills the most plants, is water. Everything slows down in October. The routine that worked in July will drown them in December, and root rot is a much more common cause of winter houseplant death than cold, pests and darkness combined.
