You bought it because the photograph on the label showed deep blue mophead flowers. You planted it, watered it, waited a year, and it came up pink. Or you inherited a blue one from the previous owner of the house and it has slowly turned muddy pink over three summers while you did nothing differently.
Or you have done everything the internet told you. Buried rusty nails at the base. Tipped coffee grounds around it every morning. Dropped pennies in the planting hole. And it is still exactly the color it always was.
Every American gardener with a hydrangea has been through some version of this. The plant that is famous for changing color refuses to change color, and none of the folk remedies do a thing.
Here is what almost nobody tells you: the color is not controlled by pH. It is controlled by aluminum. Soil pH matters only because it decides whether the aluminum already sitting in your soil is in a form the plant can actually absorb. Get that one distinction straight and everything else about hydrangea color makes sense, including why the nails and the pennies were never going to work.
There is a second thing nobody tells you, and it matters even more: most hydrangeas cannot change color at all. If you have the wrong type, no amount of soil treatment will do anything, and a good deal of the frustration out there is people trying to turn a plant blue that was never capable of it.

First: which hydrangea do you actually have?
This is the step that saves most people a wasted season. Only two species change color. Everything else in the genus is fixed at whatever color it was bred to be.
Can change color
Hydrangea macrophylla, the bigleaf hydrangea. Mopheads with big round flower clusters, and lacecaps with a flat cluster of small fertile flowers ringed by larger showy ones. Thick, glossy, coarsely toothed leaves. This is the classic seaside hydrangea and the one almost everybody means when they say hydrangea.
Hydrangea serrata, mountain hydrangea. Smaller, finer leaves, daintier lacecap flowers, generally hardier. Less common in American gardens but behaves the same way.
Cannot change color, no matter what you do
Hydrangea paniculata, panicle hydrangea. Cone-shaped flower heads rather than round ones. 'Limelight', 'Little Lime', 'Bobo', 'Quick Fire', 'PeeGee'. These open white or lime green and age to pink or dusty red as the season goes on. That aging is genetic, has nothing to do with soil, and will happen in any soil anywhere.
Hydrangea arborescens, smooth hydrangea. 'Annabelle' and 'Incrediball' are the ones everyone knows. Big white globes. They will not turn blue. There is a pink form ('Invincibelle') and it will not turn blue either.
Hydrangea quercifolia, oakleaf hydrangea. Leaves shaped like oak leaves, cone-shaped white flowers aging to pink. Fixed.
Hydrangea petiolaris, climbing hydrangea. White. Fixed.
The white exception that catches people out
Even within macrophylla, white varieties will not turn blue or pink. 'Blushing Bride' and similar white mopheads have no pigment for the aluminum to react with. They may flush pink or green as the flowers age, but that is the flower senescing, not soil chemistry.
How to check what you have. Look at the flower head shape. Round ball or flat lacecap with a fringe of showy florets means macrophylla and you are in business. Cone or panicle means you are not. If in doubt, look at the leaves: macrophylla leaves are thick, shiny and quite large, whereas paniculata leaves are thinner, duller and more pointed.
If you have a paniculata or an arborescens, you can stop reading the soil chemistry sections. Nothing there applies to your plant and no product on any shelf will change that.
What is actually going on: aluminum, not pH
Almost every article on this subject says acidic soil makes blue flowers and alkaline soil makes pink ones. That is a useful shorthand and it is also the reason so many people fail. It leaves out the actual mechanism.
The pigment. Hydrangea flowers contain a pigment called delphinidin-3-glucoside. On its own it is pink. When it binds with aluminum ions, the resulting complex is blue. Same pigment, different color depending on whether aluminum is attached to it.
Where the aluminum comes from. Almost certainly your soil already. Aluminum is one of the most abundant elements in the earth's crust and the vast majority of garden soils contain plenty. The question is almost never whether aluminum is present. It is whether the plant can take it up.
What pH actually does. Aluminum in soil is normally locked into compounds the roots cannot access. As soil becomes more acidic, those compounds break down and aluminum becomes soluble, which means available. Below roughly pH 5.5 there is enough free aluminum for the roots to pull up and deliver to the flowers, and you get blue. Above roughly pH 6.5 the aluminum is locked away again, the pigment stays unbound, and you get pink.
So pH is the gatekeeper, not the cause. Lowering pH does not make flowers blue. It unlocks the aluminum that makes flowers blue.
Why this distinction is worth having. It explains several things that otherwise look random:
Soils genuinely low in aluminum will not produce blue flowers however acidic you make them. Rare, but it happens, particularly in some sandy and heavily amended soils.
Phosphorus binds aluminum and takes it out of circulation. A high-phosphorus fertilizer will push a hydrangea pink even in acidic soil, which is why people who feed a general-purpose bloom booster sometimes watch their blue hydrangea fade while the pH gauge says nothing has changed.
Hard tap water is alkaline. Watering an acid-loving plant with it for several years slowly raises the pH in the root zone and the color drifts pink without you touching the soil.
Purple flowers are not a variety. They are a soil sitting between the two thresholds, with some pigment bound to aluminum and some not.
Uneven color across a single shrub, or even a single flower head, is the same thing at smaller scale. Different roots are reaching soil with different aluminum availability.
How to turn a hydrangea blue
You are doing two jobs at once: dropping the pH below about 5.5, and making sure there is aluminum available to absorb.
Aluminum sulfate is the main tool. It acidifies and supplies aluminum in the same application, which is why it works better than acidifiers alone.
Dissolve 1 tablespoon of aluminum sulfate per gallon of water. Soak the root zone thoroughly with this solution. Repeat every three to four weeks through spring and early summer.
Water the plant with plain water first. Applying aluminum sulfate to dry roots can scorch them. This is the single most common way people damage a hydrangea while trying to change its color.
Stop by midsummer. Continuing into late summer pushes soft growth that will not harden before winter.
Elemental sulfur is the slower, gentler alternative. Work it into the soil around the plant in autumn at the rate given on the package for your soil type. It relies on soil bacteria to convert it into acid, which takes months, so it is a next-year strategy rather than a this-year one. It is also much harder to overdo.
Feed low phosphorus. Look at the middle number on the fertilizer bag and keep it small. Something like 25-5-30, or a fertilizer sold specifically for acid-loving plants. High phosphorus locks up aluminum and works directly against everything else you are doing.
Mulch with acidic material. Pine needles, pine bark, composted oak leaves. This is a slow nudge rather than a fix, but it holds the ground you gain.
Water with rainwater if you can. Most municipal water in America is treated to be slightly alkaline to protect the pipes. Over several seasons that pushes the root zone the wrong way. A water butt on a downpipe is a bigger factor than most people realize.
Do not overdo it. Aluminum in quantity is toxic to roots. More aluminum sulfate does not mean bluer flowers, it means a damaged plant. Stick to the dilution and the interval.
How to turn a hydrangea pink
Easier than going blue, in most cases, because you are locking something away rather than making it available.
Garden lime raises pH. Dolomitic lime worked into the soil around the plant, roughly a cup per mature shrub, in autumn or early spring. Repeat annually, because rain steadily washes the effect out again.
Feed high phosphorus. The opposite of the blue instruction. Something like 25-10-10, or a bloom-booster type feed. The phosphorus binds aluminum and keeps it away from the flowers.
Do not mulch with pine needles or oak leaves. Use a neutral mulch instead: shredded hardwood, straw, composted bark.
Tap water is on your side here. If your water is hard, keep using it.
Give it time. Pink is usually the easier direction but it still takes a season.
The remedies that do nothing
This is where a great deal of effort gets wasted every year.
Rusty nails. Iron, not aluminum. Different element, no effect on the pigment. Iron also oxidises extremely slowly in soil, so even if it were the right element it would not release fast enough to matter.
Pennies. Copper, again the wrong element. And American pennies minted since 1982 are zinc with a thin copper coat, so mostly you are burying zinc.
Coffee grounds. Used grounds are close to pH neutral, because the acid mostly ends up in the coffee. They are decent organic matter and worth composting. They will not shift your soil pH in any meaningful way.
Vinegar. Acidifies briefly, then breaks down within days, and the effect is gone. Repeated applications risk damaging soil microbes and roots without ever holding a stable pH.
Citrus peels, pine cones, eggshells. No measurable effect at garden scale. Eggshells are calcium carbonate, which if anything nudges soil the alkaline way, so they work against blue.
Blueing tonics of unknown composition. Some are aluminum sulfate under a nicer label and are fine. Read the ingredients. If it does not say what is in it, you have no way to know whether you are buying the active ingredient or colored water.
How long a real change takes
Manage your expectations here, because impatience causes most of the overdosing.
A full season minimum. Flower color is set as the buds develop, so treatment applied in April affects flowers opening in June or July at the earliest.
Usually two seasons for a full change. Particularly pink to blue, which requires both a pH shift and aluminum uptake. The first year often produces muddy purple as the plant transitions.
Sometimes never, in the ground. If you garden on chalk or limestone, the soil buffers itself back toward alkaline faster than you can acidify it. You can win temporarily and you will lose eventually.
Which is why containers are the reliable answer. In a pot you control the entire growing medium. Ericaceous compost, rainwater, aluminum sulfate on schedule, and you can hold a hydrangea at a color that would be impossible in your native soil. For gardeners on alkaline ground who badly want blue, this is genuinely the only dependable route.
The regional picture across America
Where you garden decides how much work this is.
Pacific Northwest. Naturally acidic soils and soft rain. Hydrangeas often go blue here without anyone doing anything, and gardeners who want pink have to work for it. The blue hydrangeas in coastal Oregon and Washington gardens are mostly just the soil.
Northeast and New England. Generally acidic, often blue-leaning. Coastal areas particularly so. Pink is achievable with lime.
Southeast. Variable. Sandy coastal soils can be low in aluminum despite being acidic, which produces the frustrating case of an acidic soil that still will not give you blue. Worth a soil test rather than guessing.
Midwest and Great Plains. Alkaline soils are common, often with limestone underneath. Pink is the default and blue is a genuine project. Containers are the honest recommendation here.
Southwest and mountain states. Strongly alkaline, frequently with high calcium. Blue in open ground is close to impossible. Grow in pots or grow paniculatas and enjoy them for what they are.
Anywhere with hard water. Whatever your native soil, hard tap water applied over years pulls the root zone toward alkaline. If your kettle furs up, this applies to you.
Varieties worth knowing
Reliable color changers. 'Nikko Blue' is the classic and responds strongly. 'Endless Summer' reblooms and changes readily. 'Penny Mac', 'BloomStruck' and 'Big Daddy' all shift well.
Deep reds and dark pinks change less. Varieties bred for intense red pigment often refuse to go properly blue and end up muddy purple at best. 'Merritt's Supreme' and similar are worth knowing about before you spend a season trying.
Whites do not change. 'Blushing Bride', 'Madame Emile Mouillere'. Beautiful, but not part of this conversation.
If you want a fixed color and no maintenance, the paniculatas are excellent plants and completely undemanding about soil. 'Limelight' opens lime green and ages to rose. That transition is reliable everywhere from Maine to Georgia and needs nothing from you.
Common mistakes
Treating a plant that cannot change. Identify the species first. This wastes more time than everything else combined.
Applying aluminum sulfate to dry soil. Water first, always. Dry roots plus a salt solution equals scorch.
Increasing the dose because nothing happened after three weeks. Nothing was going to happen after three weeks. The dose is not the problem, the timeline is.
Feeding a high-phosphorus bloom booster while trying to go blue. Extremely common, and it quietly cancels the aluminum sulfate.
Testing pH once and assuming it holds. Soil pH drifts, especially after liming, heavy rain, or years of hard-water irrigation. Test annually if color matters to you.
Expecting one shrub to be one color. Roots explore soil that is not uniform. Mixed and mottled color on a single plant is normal and, to a lot of eyes, better looking than either extreme.
Trying to fight chalk soil in open ground. You will lose. Use a container and stop fighting.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have blue and pink flowers on the same plant?
Yes, and it happens naturally where soil conditions vary across the root zone. You can encourage it by treating only one side of the shrub, though results are unpredictable.
Why did my blue hydrangea turn pink after I moved house?
Different soil, or different water. Municipal water varies enormously between districts and it is a common cause of a plant changing after a move or after a water main is replaced.
Does the flower color affect the health of the plant?
No. Blue and pink hydrangeas are equally healthy. This is purely cosmetic, and worth remembering before you pour anything on the roots.
Can I change the color of cut flowers?
No. The color is set while the flower develops on the plant. Once cut, nothing will shift it.
My hydrangea flowers are turning green. Is that a soil problem?
No, that is age. Hydrangea flowers commonly fade to green late in the season as the pigments break down. It happens on every color and it is normal.
Do I need a soil test?
If color matters to you, yes, and it is cheap. Most county extension services in America will test soil for a modest fee and tell you both pH and nutrient levels. Home kits give you a rough pH reading, which is usually enough to know which direction you are working in.
Is aluminum sulfate safe around pets and children?
Used at label rates and watered in it is not considered hazardous, but store it out of reach and keep pets off the treated area until it has soaked in. Standard garden chemical precautions.
Will acidifying the soil hurt my other plants?
It might. Aluminum sulfate applied heavily around a hydrangea will affect anything sharing that root zone, and plenty of common companions dislike acidic conditions. Treat the hydrangea root zone specifically rather than broadcasting across a bed.
How do I keep a blue hydrangea blue once I get it there?
Keep going. Annual aluminum sulfate applications, acidic mulch, low-phosphorus feed, rainwater where possible. It is maintenance rather than a one-time fix, which is the part most people are not told when they buy the plant.
What about hydrangeas in pots?
Much easier. Use ericaceous compost, water with rainwater, and apply aluminum sulfate through spring. Repot every two or three years because the compost loses its acidity over time.
Final thoughts
If you take one thing from this, take the identification step. Look at your flower heads before you buy a single product. Round mopheads or lacecaps mean you have a plant that can change. Cones and panicles mean you do not, and every dollar spent on soil treatment is wasted.
If you have the right plant, the second thing to take is that you are managing aluminum availability, not pH for its own sake. That is why aluminum sulfate outperforms every generic acidifier, why high-phosphorus feed sabotages the effort, and why the nails and the pennies were never going to do anything.
And the third thing is patience. A season minimum, usually two. Almost all the damage done to hydrangeas in the name of color comes from someone deciding after a month that the dose was not strong enough.
For gardeners on chalk, limestone or hard water, the honest answer is a large container of ericaceous compost and rainwater. You will get a better blue in a pot in Kansas than you will fighting your soil for five years, and you will still have a healthy plant at the end of it.
And there is nothing wrong with pink. Some of the best hydrangea plantings in America are pink because the soil said so, and they look considerably better than a blue one being kept alive on chemistry.
